Maré

Avec le long weekend du 1er mai nous en avons profité pour partir à Maré, à la fête de l'avocat.

"Maré — Nengone en langue locale — est la plus sauvage et la moins connue des iles loyauté avec une superficie de 650 km2. Ses cinq étages de coraux superposés culminent à près de 130 mètres sur la côte sud. Elle est dotée d'une beauté sauvage, faite de falaises profondément découpées, de roches basaltiques, de forêts sombres, mais également de merveilleuses petites criques de sable fin nichées entre les promontoires rocheux ainsi que de longues plages inviolées bordées de cocotiers. La plaine centrale, constituée par l’ancien lagon, est percée de nombreuses grottes, et des piscines naturelles d’eau douce ou d’eau de mer abritent poissons et tortues dans un camaïeu de bleus et de verts que l’on ne trouve nulle part ailleurs aux Loyauté."

"Maré – Nengone in the local language – is the wildest and least known of the Loyalty Islands, with an area of 650 km2. Its five layers of superimposed coral reach a height of almost 130 metres on the south coast. It has a wild beauty, with its deeply carved cliffs, basalt rocks and dark forests, and wonderful little creeks with fine sand nestling between rocky promontories and long undisturbed beaches fringed with coconut palms. The central plain, made up of the old lagoon, is dotted with numerous caves and natural freshwater or saltwater pools containing fish and turtles and featuring shades of blue and green not found anywhere else in the Loyalties."

Tous les ans à cette période Maré fête l'avocat dans la tribu de Nece.  Evènement désormais incontournable en Nouvelle Calédonie, cette fête permet de valoriser le travail des agriculteurs et propose, à travers l’accueil chez l’habitant, un séjour basé sur l’authenticité.

Au programme: accueil chez l'habitant, concerts, danses, dégustations et surtout l'occasion de partager avec les locaux.

Every year at this time, Maré holds a festival for avocados in the Nece district.  A major event in New Caledonia, the festival helps highlight the work of farmers and proposes, through the home stay, a stay based on authenticity.

On the program: home stay, concerts, dansing, tastings and above all the opportunity to share with the locals.

Après 4h de bateau, nous voila à Maré ou notre transfert jusqu'a la tribu de Nece nous attendait.

Un bus très local qui nous a fait bien rire l!!!! ( surtout quand on nous a dit que nos valises allaient suivre dans un pick-up parce qu'il y n'avait pas assez de place)

After a 4 hour boat trip we arrived at Maré where our transfer to the Nece district was waiting for us.

A very special local bus!!!!!! ( that really made us laugh, especially when we are told that our cases would follow afterwards in a pick-up because there wasn't enough room for us and the luggage in the bus)

Une fois arrivés à NECE, on y a trouvé beaucoup de stands décorés avec des magnifiques tressages  et un buffet d'accueil à base d'avocats + d'autres plats locaux.

Once at the festival, many stalls decorated with beautiful braids and a nice buffet prepared with avocados and other local dishes.

Il y avait plusieurs types de bougna dont un avec roussettes.....

There was a large selection of "bougna" dishes with one made of something like a bat.... (see photo below)

Un petit tour en attendant l'installation chez l'habitant. 

Cette plage est normalement fermée au public car elle appartient au chef de la tribu.

This beach is normally closed to public as it belongs to the Tribal Chef.

Pendant les 4 jours nous étions accueillis chez Monique et Bob, des jeunes retraités adorables.

Nous avons fait la coutume en donnant un manou (morceau de tissu) et un petit billet.  Un moment très émouvant.   Malheureusement il n'y a pas de photos, mais tout est sur le film. 

During the 4 days we stayed with Monique and Bob, a retired couple adorable.

We did the Kanak custom by giving some material and a small amount of money.  An emotionnal moment.

No photos but it is all on the film.

Leur case , les toilettes et douches à l'exterieur de la maison (avec une douche froide), l'endroit pour faire la vaiselle et toute la famille qui mange une pomme cannelle offerte par Monique.

Their hut, the toilet and shower in a block outside the house (with a cold shower), the washing up area and everyone eating an apple cinnamon given by Monique.

 

De retour à la fête pour la soirée.

Back to the festival for the evening.

Le lendemain matin, rendez-vous à 6h pour la randonnée Shabadran.  Mais en realité, départ à 7h15 (vive l'heure NC) donc le temps de boire encore un petit café!!

The next day, meeting at 6 am for a the Shabadran hike.  As it was 6 am New Caldedonia time, we left at 7.15 am so had time for another coffée.

"Il se dit de ce lieu:  l’un des plus beaux sites de Calédonie.   Une randonnée de deux heures et demie, iodée, sportive, sur une corniche corallienne (souvent tranchante comme une lame) surplombant le bleu profond de la mer qui se fracasse sur un platier en forme de terrasses. Au bout, se cache la plage de Shabadran, inaccessible en bateau, secrète et inviolée. Spectacle, peut-être unique au monde, de trous souffleurs et de vagues qui éclatent en gerbes blanches sur des vasques disposées en étages."

"People say its definitely one of the most beautiful sites in New Caledonia. A two and a half hour hike, exposed to the elements, sometimes strenuous, on a coral ledge (often sharp as a blade) overlooking the deep blue of the sea, which smashes onto a reef flat in the form of terraces. At the end is hidden Shabadran Beach, inaccessible by boat, secret and unspoilt. A spectacle, perhaps unique in the world, of blowholes and waves breaking up into white spray over basins arranged in layers."

On commencait par un voyage derriere un pick-up, pour traverser 7 km de cocoteraie....  (on avait le choix entre le pick-up ou un camion de la gendarmerie...).  Je n'ai pas besoin de vous dire que les enfants ont adoré le voyage!!!!

To start, a trip in the back of a pick-up to cross 7 km of coconut trees...  ( we had the choice between the pick-up and the gendarmerie lorry..)   I don't need to tell you how the boys enjoyed the trip!!!!

Sur le chemin de retour le stress montait (pour moi) car il fallait redescendre par le mur, mais je l'ai fait ( pas trop le choix heh)

On the way back I started getting a bit stressed as we had to climb back down the big wall, but I did it (didn't have any choice).

De retour dans le pick-up!  Quelle journée!!!

Le jour d'après, pas moyen de trouver une voiture de location donc décision:  le tour du sud en vélo!  Quelle aventure!!

For the next day we couldn't find a car to hire, so we decided to visit the south of the island on bikes......  what an adventure!!

L'heure de retour, avant la tombée de la nuit...  50 km parcourus lors de cette journée.

Time to leave before it got dark.  50 km traveled during the day.

De retour à la fête pour la soirée et un petit changement de look pour moi.

Dernier petit déjeuner avec Monique et Bob.

Ils nous ont offert un manou et un billet pour la coutume de départ.

They offered us some material and a note for the leaving custom.

Derniers tours des stands et "coutume du départ" du groupe, avant de partir dans l'apres midi pour prendre le bateau retour.

Last moments at the festival and the leaving custom from all the group, before leaving in the afternoon to get the boat back to Nouméa.

 

Des moments magiques, innoubliables qui resterons à jamais gravés dans nos têtes  et surtout bouclage des îles loyauté ( OUVEA, LIFOU et MARE) qui méritent de s'y arréter. Au revoir car ça n'est pas un adieu !!!

Les Marmites de Dumbéa - - The Marmites of Dumbéa

Départ le lundi de Pâques de Nouméa pour aller à Dumbea à une demi-heure de route.  Avec nos sacs à dos, beaucoup d'eau , une carte faite par Noel la veille et un GPS, nous sommes partis pour faire une grande randonnée jusqu'aux "Marmites".

Departure on Easter Monday from Noumea to go to Dumbea, a half hour drive away. With our backpacks, lots of water and a map, we left for a big hike to the "Marmites".

Des le départ de la randonée on commence par traverser la rivière (La Dumbea). 

Il est conseillé de prendre 2 paires de chausseurs, car il faut traverser la rivière plusieurs fois, mais en voyant la rivière dès le début, nous sommes partis en chausseurs d'eau directement (en laissant les baskets dans la voiture...)

The beginning of the hike starts by crossing the river (The Dumbea).

It is advised to take 2 pairs of shoes, as you cross over the river several times, but seeing the river at the beginning we decided to keep our "water/beach shoes" and left our trainers in the car..

La traversée de la rivière peut s'avérer plus ou moins difficile en fonction du niveau d'eau, mais reste assez périeuse avec de gros rochers très glissants.

The crossing over the river can be quite difficult depending on the water level, but still quite périeuse with the large slippery rocks.

Après presque 3h de marche, nous voila arrivés aux Marmites.

Un endroit magnifique, mais pas trop accessible à pied.  Il faut sauter dans l'eau pour se baigner dans la rivière.

After walking for about 3 hours, we arrived at The Marmites.

A beautiful place, but not very accessible to go and have a swim.  If you want to go, you have to jump.

Bien contents d'être arrivés et bien contents de pouvoir faire un arrêt pour manger!

Happy to have arrived and glad to be able to have a break and some lunch!

De retour à la rivière un peu plus calme pour se baigner avant le départ.

Back to the river where it was calmer to have a dip before leaving.

Motivé, motivé, il fallait arriver à la voiture avant la tombée de la nuit.

De plus, on commencait tous à avoir mal aux pieds à cause des chausseurs d'eau (qui n'ont presque pas de semelle) donc dur dur de marcher sur les rochers.

At this time we needed to find some motivation for returning back to the car before nightfall.

Not easy, as our feet were all hurting because of our water shoes and walking on the rocks was really tough.

On devait avoir peur de la nuit car le retour a été fait en deux fois moins de temps!

We must have been worried about it getting dark, as the return was done in half the time!

Plus que la rivière a traverser... mais aie aie aie les pieds!!!

Just the last bit of river to cross... but ahhhhhhhhh our feet!!

Une superbe journée avec des magnifiques paysages tout au long de la marche.

A really good day with lovely landscapes all the way.

10 ans à Nouméa - - 10 years old in Nouméa

"Shooting the world" est le projet d'un jeune Simon, ayant l'idée de partir à la rencontre des enfants à travers le monde.
Il a passé deux jours avec la classe d'Alexis. Un super montage vidéo et deux jours inoubliables pour les enfants.

"Shooting the world" is a project by Simon, a young traveller, with the idea of meeting children all over the world. He spent two days with Alexis's class. A really good vidéo and two unforgettable days for the children.

 

 

Une journée à Nouméa - - A day at Nouméa

 

Le luxueux paquebot The World était de passage à Nouméa pendant le long weekend de Paques.

"The World" est le premier paquebot habitation qui a commencé à naviguer en Mars 2002.  Le navire est long de 196 mètres.  C'est un immeuble de 110 appartements avec un équipage de 320 personnes.  Pour sa première année de navigation, il a mouillé dans 120 ports et 46 pays.

A son bord, les passagers, qui sont propriétaires de leur cabine, vont et viennent à leur guise sur ce navire qui fait le tour du monde toute l’année. 

The luxury liner The World, was visiting Noumea during the Easter long weekend.

"The World" is the first residential cruise ship that began sailing in March 2002. The ship is 196 meters long. It's a building of 110 apartments with a crew of 320 people. For its first year of sailing, he anchored in 46 countries and 120 ports.

On board, passengers, who own their cabs, come and go as they please on the ship that tours the world throughout the year.

Je crois qu'on va attendre un peu pour acheter notre appartement...........

I think we'll wait a bit before buying an apartment......

Ensuite, direction la plage pour l'après-midi avec une maré basse très surprenante.

Du coup, nous en avons profité (sauf Brian qui a voulu rester sur la plage) pour aller sur les rochers qu'y en temps normal sont innaccessibles à cause de l'eau .

We then left for an afternoon at the beach with a very low tide. 

We made the most of it (apart from Brian that wanted to stay in the water) by going on the rocks that are normally very difficult to reach because of the water surrounding them.

Weekend à Farino - - Weekend at Farino

Un petit weekend très sympa à Farino..

Situé à 116 km au nord-ouest de Nouméa, Farino (la plus petite commune du territoire) se distingue par son implantation géographique privilégiée. Le village est en effet curieusement perché en pleine nature, à 350 m d’altitude, sur les contreforts de la chaîne centrale.

Ce village vert de montagne où règne une atmosphère paisible et conviviale, est dirigée par la seule femme Maire du pays.

A nice weekend at Farino ..

Located 116 km northwest of Noumea, Farino (the smallest town of the territory) is distinguished by its privileged geographical location. The village is perched in the nature, 350 m above sea level on the foothills of the central chain.

This mountain village gives a peaceful and friendly atmosphere and is led by the only woman mayor in the country.

Après un petit tour au gîte, nous voila au parc 'Les grandes fougères' pour une grande balade à travers la forêt humide.

Plusieurs circuits sont possibles et nous avons choisi le parcours de 2h30.

After a small tour of where we were staying, we went to the "Large Fern trees Park" (not easy translating) for a big walk in the rainforest.

Several walks of different times are available and we chose to do 2 hours 30.

Une bonne balade à travers la foret, avec la rivière, la chaleur et l'humidité, et le tout en 'claquette'.

A good walk through the forest with the river, heat and humidity.

De retour a notre gîte pour la nuit  'Le refuge de Farino'.

Le lendemain, direction la cascade de Farino qui se trouve juste à coté du gîte.

The next day we left for another walk towards the Farino waterfalls.

Le retour en métropole - - Return dates

Les choses se précises petit à petit pour notre retour en métrople....

 Nous avons notre convocation à l'embarquement et notre ordre de mutation dans nos mains.

Départ le 5 Aout à midi de la Nouvelle Calédonie en passant par Tokyo,

avant d'arriver à Paris le 6 Aout à 4h15.

Things are gradually being officialised for our return to France.....

Our flight is now booked and we have the official paper saying where we are moving to.

Departure from New Caledonia on the 5th August at midday with a quick stop at Tokyo, before arriving at Paris on the 6th August at 4.15 am.

 

Non, nous n'irons pas à La Rochelle comme on nous a dit mais

Marseille...

No, we will not be going to La Rochelle as we were told, but

Marseille...

mais une chose est certaine...  nous allons en profiter au maximum jusqu'au dernier jour sur le caillou!!!!

but one thing is sure.... we are going to make the most of everything up until the last day in NC!!!!!

Portes ouvertes au centre culturel Tjibaou - - Open day at the Tjibaou cultural center

Quoi de neuf en métropole?

Pour nous, une journée au centre culturel Tjibaou pour les portes ouvertes, avec plein de choses à voir.

Whats new in England?

For us, a nice day at the Tjibaou cultural center for their open day with lots to see.

Cinq minutes après notre arrivés des danses traditionnelles comme on les aimes.

Le groupe a fait le déplacement de Lifou pour la journée.

Just after we arrived there were traditional dances.

The group came from Lifou for the day.

Pendant plus d'une heure, sous une chaleur étouffante ils ont chanté et dansé.

For more than one hour in stifling heat they sang and danced.

A la fin, le centre Tjibaou a fait "la coutume d'au revoir" avec la troupe qui ait venu montrer leurs differentes cultures etc.

Très beau à voir en direct et de plus, il y avait le fils de Jean Marie Tjibaou (en chemise blanche) qui est d'ailleurs le président du centre.

At the end, the Tjibaou center did the 'custom' with the people that had come to show the different cultures etc.

Very nice to see and to add to that, the son of Jean-Marie Tjibaou (in the white shirt) was present.  He is the president of the center.

Les relations intercommunautaires empruntent les chemins coutumiers et sont régies par des rituels d’échange : c’est ce que l’on appelle la coutume.

Relationships between communities is possible due to the traditional travel routes that are governed by exchange rituals: Customs.

Faire la coutume, c’est établir une relation privilégiée et unique avec un individu ou un groupe d’individus en un temps précis. C’est se reconnaître l’un l’autre. Les échanges de paroles s’appuient sur des dons, dont les plus importants sont traditionnellement les monnaies kanak qui représentent l’ancêtre du clan et les ignames sacrées. Par le geste coutumier, on reconnaît la hiérarchie de la chefferie, ses structures séparées par des droits et une gestion semblable à celle des communes. Dans les tribus, il y a un ordre, un pouvoir à respecter. C’est donc à la grande chefferie qu’il faut demander l’autorisation d’accéder à la mer, à la montagne, de circuler sur les terres de la tribu.

Establishing a custom means building a privileged and unique relationship with an individual or group of individuals in a specific time. It is about recognizing one another. Verbal exchanges rely on donations, of which the most important are traditionally the Kanak currencies representing the ancestor of the clan and the sacred yams. By the customary gesture, we recognize the hierarchy of chiefdom (leadership), its different structures based on rights and an administration similar to that of a village. In the tribes, there is an order, a power to be respected. Therefore, from the leadership we must ask permission to access the sea, the mountains, and travel on the lands belonging to the tribe.

 

 

 

La rentrée - - Back to school

Après plus de 2 mois de vacances, ca y est, c'est l'heure de la rentrée. 

La première rentrée scolaire de l'année car la deuxième sera en septembre en métropole.  Une année pas comme les autres car ils vont faire seulement deux trimestres avant de partir.

After more than 2 months holiday, its time to go back to school.

A school year, not like the others as the boys will only do two terms, before starting another year in France in september.

D'abord Alexis qui rentre en CM2......

et puis Brian qui rentre en 5ème.

La fin des vacances - - End of the holidays

Encore quelques jours de vacances avant la rentrée scolaire.

A few more days on holiday before going back to school.

Les enfants sont déscendus déguisés et nous ont fait un beau spectacle.

Visite du centre culturel Tjibaou et un dernier tour au bord de mer avec un dernier couché de soleil.
